Great Horses’ Ties to the Great Land

Anchorage—

The Last Frontier’s connections to the Triple Crown continue. Last year Mine That Bird—a horse co-owned by former VECO executive Mark Allen—won the Kentucky Derby before taking second in the Preakness and third in the Belmont Stakes. Last Saturday First Dude—a horse named after Todd Palin, the husband of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin—placed second in the Preakness.

Bill Allen is part of both horses' stories. Mark Allen appears to have bought his share of Mine That Bird out of funds he got after his father sold VECO, and Sarah Palin’s new-face-running-against-the-good-old-boys campaign for Governor in 2006 was substantially aided by the FBI’s searches of legislative offices that concentrated on crimes Bill Allen was involved in.

Geez--Even If You Are a Lifelong Alaskan Born in the Territory and Still Sport a Full Beard Left Over...

Anchorage--

...from your vacation, they can still call you "East Coast looking" if you wear the sports jacket you got as a gift from your fiancee (a former trapper and musher who has slayed many fish and land critters).

From the "Alaska Ear" gossip column in Sunday's Anchorage Daily News:

OUT AND ABOUT ... Earwigs spotted former Gov. Tony Knowles being unusually voluble and demonstrative during what looked like an interview at Side Street Espresso Tuesday evening. The interviewer was described as "white-haired and East Coast looking," which Ear understands to mean he wore a jacket with elbow patches. The Omniscient Orifice has no idea who it was. Joe McGinniss? He's a white-haired guy and writing a book with the wonderful working title "Sarah Palin's Year of Living Dangerously," set for publication by Random House next year. But this white-hair had a beard and at last glimpse McGinniss didn't. So who knows. Maybe Tony's dictating his memoirs.

This event was actually Wednesday morning (in the words of the "Ear," "The truth is so limiting"), but the man with the former Governor was clearly me. I'll own up to my white hair, but I thought my fur-face made me look more like a prospector than a professor. I'll try to choke back my disappointment and keep working on my own book.

To see me how you could see me and decide for yourself, check out the next post.

I've Been Gone and Then Unexpectedly Busy, So...

Anchorage—

…my WOW! comes highly delayed. My Governor retains the capacity to shock and surprise.

Given this blog’s focus on actual criminality in Alaska public life, this is not the place to find wild speculation, sordid rumors, or blue-sky guesses regarding why Sarah Palin resigned or what her bold decision will mean for her, the state, or the country. That stuff is available all over the Internet.

I will say that Sarah Palin surged into the governorship in part due to her image as an ethically clean populist who was shaking up a grubby and tainted Old Boys’ Club. It was striking, then, that right after the sudden announcement of her intent to resign the FBI stated that she was not under investigation by the agency. This was a great departure from the federal government’s usual practice of not commenting on the status of anybody except those who have been charged, and it seemed that there was so much uncertainty and frenzy about the actual reasons for Governor Palin’s announcement of her intent to resign that the FBI felt compelled to make an exception.

Coming tomorrow: Judge Sedwick announces that the prison doors likely loom soon for Bill Allen and Rick Smith—and what that announcement means.
